I can’t get the time to do anything but sell the other fellow some plugs and stuff to catch the big ones. Talk about big ones, they haven’t all got away, this time. They get bigger and bigger every day. I thought last week when Franklin Prevatt brought his 6 3-4 bass in that he was a big one and he was a nice one. Then here come -Colin Smith with one weigh ing almost the same thing and I think—well, they have got all the big ones. But no you don’t. Here comes Lonnie Britt with one weighing 7 1-4 lb. I says to Crowson, “That’s the limit.” But about that time Leo Waters walk- would ever catch a fish. But he has the record on crappie so far. Good for good old Bill. All this happened over the past weekend. Then after the police got into it I thought everything would get quiet, but no, you don’t. This a. m. Mr. Zimp Leggett came calking in a-dragging something. I says to him, whqt in the world have you got? He says, Look and see. I began t otear open the pap er bag and there was the biggest big mouth bass I had ever laid my peepers on, but he only weigh ed 10 lbs. 12 1-2 ozs. Hats off to Mr. Zimp. He had the rag so far. So I says, “Well, that will be all the big ones.” But not yet. William along with one lb. I shake my Griffin came weighing 9 1-4 head and say, “Well, I’ll be gol-flammed!” So along about then I got a call from, our city police station and I says, says I, I haven't done any thing. They says, yes, but we have. Bill Shaw, one of our po licemen, had) a big crappie he' wanted to weight in on the rodeo. I says alright, bring him in. So he had a big one. It was a While all this was going on, P. S. (Pat) Kornegay and D. B. Mc Neill, they up and go to the beach. They are both old salties anyway, you know. Pat, he always came over to tell me how many they caught, but not this time. I kept waiting for him to come over, but no, he never came. So I go over to his house and he had about one half bushel of toad fish, better known to some Lum bertonions as June mullets, cause I myself happened to catch a few of them a long time ago. Don’t know just what kind of fish they are, but anyone desiring any in formation about them, just ask Pop Treadway about them (and ask him, how he found out.) He can tell you all you want to know. Guess I better not tell you any tall stories this week, but I’ll be seeing you. So long and good luck. the (gas tax in three Pennsylvania, Washington—has Kansas, States— and been ordered increased by one-cent, two cents and one and one-half cents re spectively. RALEIGH — Twenty-two states in the nation have increased their gasoline tax by from one to two cents per gallon since World War II, Dr. Henry W. Jordon, State Highway Commission chairman, said today. At least 17 other States, now holding legislative sessions, are considering similar increases. These figures were compiled by ^W^M^ Extra Large and Fancy FLA. Tht highway chairman cited these figures to show why the Commis- sicn needs the revenue from an additional one-cent tax on gaso line to maintain its pre-war level of operations. “The State’s six-cent per gallon tax on gasoline yields about 70 to 75 per cent of the State Highway Commission’s in come,” Dr. Jor dan noted. "North Carolina has not increased this tax since 1931, Carolina Legislature sees fit to give the Commission the one-cent increase requested, we will be un able to operate even at the pre- war, pre-defense level of 1940. P. Moore, director in charge of the North Carolina Crop Improvement Association at State College. Corn hybrids, Dr. Moore explains are sold by grades which may" re quire special seed plates. Since good stands are needed to make high yields, attention must be giv en to the selection of the proper size, plates. Many farmers rework the cells of either old or new plates in order to get an accurate seed drop. The important point is to make sure that the largest kernels of corn can be planted without difficulty. If this is done, the smaller kernels will cause no trouble, especially, in well-graded lots of corn. Most manufacturers of corn planters are willing to help farm ers select the proper plates, says Dr. Moore. However, he adds, far mers must be willing to help them selves. They must realize that luck is neither a good farming partner nor a substitute for the proper plates. By CPL. X. A. MORRISON “Flying Artillerymen” of the U. S. Army have to be good. More and more dependence is being placed in them for they are the eyes through which the artillery aims its weapons and sees its re sults. They are important mem bers of the team that is helping the Artillery reach its objective— 100 per cent accuracy. Soldiers assigned to all branches of the Artillery School are among the best trained in the Army to day. They must have high intelli gence, and a good educational background with emphasis place on mathematics. In the field, the importance of teamwork in attaining maximum results is stressed over and over again. All members of the team know that without the “Flying Artillerymen” the effectiveness of their fire can be negligible. With 173 years of sservice to America, the Artillery arm of the U.'S. Army looks forward to fur ther achievements in its peace- time program through more and better use of the “Flyying Artil lerymen.” & Feed Store NORTH CEDAR STREET while 19 states tax by one or lon sincethe II.
